Weekend at Leewai’s | NEW MIX

All vinyl all funk mix to lighten up your days. This is the free spirited cousin to the soul mix that is Neil’s Night Out.

It’s been almost a year now since I lived in Australia. I would be lying if I said I didn’t miss that life. On one of my last nights there, the Leewai sibilings surprised me with an amazing time at their parents’ palace. Imagine an open bar with impromptu Fijian folk dance jams. And thus, Weekend at Leewai’s.

More recently, I attended a party in San Diego called Soul Flexin. It was just what I needed, an open format night with an easy going crowd. At the helm were the talented DJ Raichous and Mona Lisa, selecting everything from Kid N Play to Luther Vandross. To my surprise, they were rocking all wax that night. I felt inspired. A couple of days later, I dusted off my turntables, and recorded this.

Erykah Badu Tribute

Erykah BADU “Here’s a little story that must be told…” Mixtape! BY LINOTYPE by krystel”diolita”diola

A few months ago, Diolita hit me up off the strength of the Spring Fling tape to lace her with an Erykah Badu tribute.  Apparently there has been a huge movement happening to get Badu to tour Sydney, with Diolita organizing an official petition to make it happen.  It has culminated in Erykah jumping on the Good Vibes festival, which just happens to be in Sydney this afternoon.

About the mix itself - it’s heavily inspired by multitrack masterpieces from mixtape icons such as the Beat Junkies, the Under The Table Crew and DJ Spinbad.  This is my take on that style, using all of my favorite Badu songs, minus her slow jams.  I let those play out.

Neil’s Night Out | NEW MIX

Some people go out on the town, for a wild night of debauchery, drinking, and loud music, yet what they’ll really hear throughout the evening are the sweet sounds of classic soul.  One such person is Neil Leewai, a real man about town, a quiet storm onto himself.  This is the soundtrack to his night out.

This mix was all done live in one take.  As opposed to Spring Fling, which took 5 track mixing and hours of post work, this was done on one piece of equipment in 25 minutes.

SPRING FLING | for stream and download

There’s not much backstory to this.  Keep in mind that the seasons in Australia are in reverse to that of the States; their July is dead cold while their December is sweltering.  Spring is the best though; not too hot, not too cold, not too dry, not too rainy.  It’s just right.  Winter’s end inspired me to celebrate by making a mix, reflecting the dynamic nature by spanning many genres, speeds and moods.  It was a natural fit to collaborate with Thirteen Itches and Capsule for some proper packaging and distribution.  And proper it was, the initial 50 copies getting snatched within the first week.  So here it is finally for stream and download, my tribute to Spring, and to my time so far in Sydney.

new mix!  on the rap tip.  more info here: http://www.thirteenitches.com.au/blog/?p=3292

backstory:  after reading Complex’s ‘75 Greatest Tunnel Bangers’, i’ve been practicing mixes with a lot of grimy ny style rap.  this is one of those practice sessions, along with a few new-ish songs which fit the vibe.  originally meant as a demo for a couple of promoters, the homey KC Avila at thirteen itches heard it and immediately wanted to present it on the itches blog.  excuse some of the rough mixing, and feel free start some static whilst listening.
